Thirsty Thursdays - Svedka Colada review/taste test

Source of pic: Packaging Digest

Today, I decided to go to the liquor store for a sec to try out Voli Vodka, but they did not sell it anymore. However, I stumbled upon a newer item called Svedka Colada, which is a take off a real Pina Colada. It seemed very interesting and the store owner said that's actually really good. I got home and tried it on some ice and I have to say it's PRETTY DAYUM good especially for the price. I am a faithful Ciroc Coconut drinker as you can tell from all of the Ciroc posts I have on this blog. However, if you are looking for something half the price and almost as good, you cannot go wrong with particular bad boy. It's sad how late to the party I was in finding this thing! Good thing I randomly went to the liquor store today! LOL. Let's get into the review.

Nose: A strong Coconut smell with a very little/hidden Pineapple smell. It's actually pretty rich.

Taste: A nice coconut flavor to it, slight burn in the finish with hints of Pineapple.

Mixing: Pineapple Juice is an obvious mix to this concoction, but I chose to go with a Cranberry chaser because I did not want to overpower the Pineapple. I noticed that the Pineapple came out a bit more when I tasted it with the mixer. It's funny how sometimes a certain mix gets the flavors out there better.

Overall, this gets a B+ from me. Is it Ciroc Coconut? Definitely not! Ciroc has the best tasting coconut vodka, imho. Way too smooth a finish and the coconut flavor is a bit more authentic. However, it is a GREAT alternative for the price point and the pineapple added to it puts the spirit in a slightly different lane! Definitely consider buying Svedka Colada when you are going to a party or something! Enjoy!

Here are a few mixes I've seen with this particular spirit:

How to make your own Rose Cocktails

When you’re feeling creative, rose wine is not always the first thing you reach for. However with the help of a good quality rose you can put a new refreshing twist on some old classics.

Rose Margarita

Simply top up a margarita and one of the acquired tastes of the cocktail world becomes a light summery drink with plenty of punch.

Ingredients

2pts Tequila

1pt Triple Sec

4pts Rose

Salt

Lime

Rose Cosmo

Replace the cranberry juice in a cosmopolitan with rose to give it a dry tannic quality. Creating a cosmo with the essence of a martini.

Ingredients

1pt Vodka

1pt Triple Sec

2pt Rose

Lime

The cocktails were made with this Grenache from Juicy Grape Wines, chosen for it’s sweet fruity flavour with a well-rounded finish. The originals of these cocktails use lime to give them a sharp citrus edge, however, when using this rose it may be wise to go easy on the lime to allow its subtle flavours to shine through. Where you go with these cocktails is entirely up to you but trust me, these drinks don’t need to be given extra kick!

Mixing drinks is all about experimentation, try using different combinations of wine and cocktails to see what you uncover.

Does Diet or Regular Soda in alcohol mixer affect intoxication levels?

Source of pic from: Oprah

I've found an interesting article that ties in intoxication level, DUIs, and mixers. According to an article from Fox News, this is definitely the case. Beware with your Long Island Iced Teas and Rum + Coke. While you might be focused on shedding a few calories drinking alcoholl, you might as well learn to pick a lower calorie vodka or simply sip on ice. Hell, even a Skinny Margarita would be a lot better.

According to Cecile Marczinski, an assistant professor of psychology at Northern Kentucky University, "think they're saving some calories by drinking their alcohol with a diet drink, [but] it's much more harmful to the body to have a high blood alcohol concentration." Apparently, there was a test shown between people that were drinking an alcoholic mix with soda and diet soda. The study was found that the diet soda actually absorbed a lot quicker in the small intestine while the regular soda had a delay in absorption. If you ever know about champagne, the bubbles in them actually are a form of carbonation and that's why you get inebriated a lot quicker. This is a very interesting article. So when you are downing these diet soda mixers, keep in mind you should stay away from a car because you do not want to risk getting a DUI.

Here's an interesting video on DUIs, getting wasted and the like from Skyy John aka the Tipsy Bartender:

New Amsterdam Peach Review/Taste Test/Mixes

This is another pretty solid joint! Go cop it if you like Peach Vodka.

Smelling Notes
This smells like an Orangey Peach flavor. Ciroc's Peach flavor actually smells richer because of Peach and kind of a floral scent, which is pretty interesting.

Taste
Slight burn but nothing too bad. The citrus and peach notes come out well on ice. Good for shots and shooters (I mixed mine with Orange Juice)

Mixes

You can make a sex on the beach with this. You can make Fuzzy Navels with the Orange Juice. Also, you can do a nice concoction with Cranberry. Here's another recipe called the Peach Fizz.

Price Point
13-15 bucks for 750mL

Overall:
C+ (I like the Redberry a bit better).

New Amsterdam Redberry Review/Taste Test/Mixes

Hey, everyone! I'm getting to this a bit late because I've been extremely busy lately, but I wanted to do two separate reviews. One review will be the New Amsterdam Red Berry.

I was at a party this Saturday and I have to say I was a bit on the broke side. LOL. It's safe to say that I pretty much wanted to cop something for cheap. So I bought a 375 ML bottle of New Amsterdam Red Berry. Now, I've seen a review on it (check it here) and I have to say it's not a bad replacement for the Ciroc Red Berry if you don't got the cake or if you want to bring a little something to a party where people don't care and they will mix their drink anyway.

Smelling Notes
Definitely has a Blackberry, Strawberry and Raspberry smell. Very good aroma. You certainly get a lot of sweetness in the note and can tell someone put time into infusing the vodka with the strawberry/raspberry/raspberry flavor.

Taste
Slight burn but nothing too bad. The strawberry feel definitely comes through and the hint of raspberry at the end. NOT BAD! It's not as smooth as a Ciroc because that vodka already has a grape/berry influence coming from France. However, if you don't have the funds to get a bottle of Ciroc, this is certainly a solid option. Also, it's a party favorite when it comes to flavored vodka.

Mixes

There are a few things you can do with Berry Flavored Vodkas. A Cape Cod with a Lime Twist (you cannot go wrong with Cranberry Juice). You can do it up a bit with a Simply Raspberry Lemonade feel, which is a bit sweeter and more refreshing. You can keep it simple with some Sprite (which makes it taste like an alcoholic Sprite remix). More New Amsterdam Red Berry recipes here.

Price Point

Depending on where you're located, you can get a traditional 750mL for roughly $13-15 bucks. A 1.75L for about $20-25. Definitely a worthy buy ESPECIALLY for a party.

Overall: B- to B - It's affordable, tastes solid, and a great mixing cocktail for your party.

Cockspur Fine Rum Review

I stumbled upon this at the liquor store and it got a few good reviews. I was actually shocked at how good this tasted for being so cheap (got it for $5.99).

Smell

Brown Sugar
Nutmeg
Almond

Almost like any decent dark or fine rum you'd find. It was actually pleasant.

Tasting notes

Going in smooth. Really great aroma and feel. Bits of a nice kind of caramel ish flavor going down. You can definitely taste a bit of oak. It reminds me of Appleton Estate but just two notches down in quality (acceptable due to the price).

Overall - I'd have to give this roughly a B-. I can sip this if I wanted to on ice, but I'd much rather make a cocktail out of it. It's pretty smooth, but not overly smooth to where I can just sip this all day long. Some ice and a splash of cranberry juice makes this a very pleasant drink.

In fact, I posted last night my Spur of the Moment Cocktail. Go check that out!

Friday Night Cocktail: The Spur of the Moment!

Today, I made a quick trip to the liquor store and I had a plan for the weekend to really dive deep into building a creative cocktail without spending the money that goes into it. I was trying to find a Coconut Rum such as Largo Bay or something to make an infusion, but it was unavailable. I found a rum called Cockspur Fine Bajan Rum. I never heard it before, but I knew that Barbados made great rums such as the Mount Gay extra old. I said why not? I checked on my phone to sites such as Ministry of Rum, and found that a guy by the name of Arctic Wolf made a review of Cockspur Fine Rum . I was rather pleased with his review because all I wanted was a decent review.

I found a few other reputable reviews gave it a B to B+ grade. I said to myself, "Why not?"

I sipped it neat (I will provide a review of this later) and it was actually solid. So I said why not come up with a cocktail?

Recipe
1 1/2 oz Cockspur Fine Rum
1 1/2 oz Cranberry Juice
