Jose Cuervo Especial is Garbage, Here is Why via Common Man Cocktails

You see, there was this one time last summer I really got in an incredible evening of drinking. I clearly remember this one day in fact when I was over my Aunt's for her birthday. I had two shots of Jose Cuervo Especial. Not only was it crappy, but I felt the remnants of those shots the next day. It was not a great feeling by any means. LOL. That kind of stirred me off Tequila for a bit. I do like Tequila, but not as much as a Vodka or a Rum, you know?

You wanna know why you get headaches and feel horrible after that Tequila? Well, first of all...the whole thing is NOT Tequila! Yes! You are being duped by a cheap ass drink that will screw you up! 51% is tequila! The rest is made up of straight up corn or grain alcohol plus a boatload of sugar. That combo of corn or grain alcohol and crappy sugar makes you feel a headache in the morning. That's why a lot of the time, I stay away from cheap ass alcohol. Alcohol isn't the best thing to drink in general, but at least drink some quality shit, you know? Anyway, he says EVERYTHING you need to know on why you should STAY THE HELL AWAY from JOSE CUERVO ESPECIAL! LOL.

The only Tequila you should mess with are those that claim 100% Agave! That's it!

43 Black and Blues Cocktail Recipe via Common Man Cocktails

Recipe
2 oz. Licor 43
1 oz. Blue Curacao
1/2 oz. Captain Morgan Black

How to Choose a Glass for Your Cocktail - The Cocktail Spirit with Robert Hess

I touched on it briefly when talking about the Wine Glasses. But choosing the right glass is imperative. Let's take for example red wine. You want the glass to be a bit more robust because you want to see the legs, the aroma of the cocktail, this that and the third. Also, for a mixed drink, you might want to use a longer glass not for the alcohol but for the mixer (whether it's cranberry, apple, or orange juice). It all really depends on the type of liquor and the build up.

How to Garnish cocktails - The Cocktail Spirit with Robert Hess

In my opinion, garnishes are one of the most important components of the drink. It's one of those things that really adds a lot of spunk and character. Not only with the presentation but it definitely adds major flavor. For example, if you are the kind of person that loves a Cape Cod or more commonly known as a Vodka/Cranberry, then a lime would be suitable because Cranberry is on the sour side but it's a bit sweet, too. The lime adds a bit of a bitterness and tangyness to the cocktails over all flavor.

Also with certain drinks that use Cognac, Brandy, or even a Gin. The garnish adds an extra scent. For example, a martini with a twist would include your gin then a lemon peel and twist. The oils add a bit of flavor, but the oils adds more of a lemon note to the cocktail bringing out the aroma more!

Here's a great description from Robert Hess talking about garnishes and flavors. Enjoy!

Liquid Indulgence - Kathy Casey's Liquid Kitchen - Small Screen

Now, I've seen some Spiked Milkshakes or Spiked Ice Creams. But this is a bit more sophisticated. The ingredients are a little bit more flavorful and a bit more bourgeois? LOL. Anyway, this is a great dessert treat. You'll definitely love it!

Recipe:
1 1/2 cups ice
2 shots espresso, cooled (about 2 1/2 ounces)
1 cup high quality vanilla cream
4 Tbsp. caramel sauce
----------------------------
4 ounces Mezcal
Fleur de sal for garnishing

A Round for the House: The History of Drinking in America (documentary)

A bit outdated but still a good documentary talking about the history of drink in the United States. I like to drink, but I make sure to drink moderately. Binge drinking on a regular basis is just not cool, and its very unhealthy. Make sure to take care of yourself and the people around you. You don't want a DUI, you don't want to get injured under the influence or any other crazy occurrences from alcohol induced situations! Thanks =). Peace!

All about shots (history, amount, and types)!!

Alcohol usage depending on where you are can be very interesting. Using some shot glasses or pourers get you to your buzz quicker, while others may be a bit on the slow sip til your death phase. I'm kidding about death, but you kind of work your way in there.

In the U.S., typically a shot is like a cocktail - 1.5 ounces. Europe it might be a little bit lower 1 to 1.2. Other places you might have a choices between a small (1 oz) and a standard 1.2-1.5 ounces. It all really depends where you are at. The same thing for asking a double, etc. I mean, in Canada a double shot could be around 2.5 while American in between 2.5 to 3 oz. The strength and pricing is different with each country.

There are a few different histories with the name of "shot". The first time I heard of the history of a shot was the Civil War where people would actual take a sip of liquor right before the battle started.

You can also pour shots using a Jigger, which is used for good measurement. One side is usually .75 ounces and the other side is a full ounce. That way it makes it easier to pour instead of eyeballing while you free pour.

Some decent history lessons for shots/shot glasses: you can check out Wikipedia and Common Man Cocktails.

Now, there some strong shots like the ABC (Absinthe, Bacardi 151, and Chartreuse)and refreshing ones for the ladies like the Buttery Nipple. You can check out both of these below. Also, check out the different shots I have posted

Add ice and do a wet shake
Add ice cubes to a sour glass and strain the shaker into the glass
Shake the foam from the shaker into the cocktail glass
Top the cocktail with soda water

Corpse Reviver #1 - The Cocktail Spirit with Robert Hess

Now, this is funny. Old school drinkers used to actually sip brandy the day after a drunken stupor? LOL. Wow, no wonder there were serious drunkards back then. Peep this kind of historical cocktail reviver. Also, check out the book link below at the source! Enjoy!

Corpse Reviver #1 Recipe

The Skittle Vodka Flip Cocktail via Common Man Cocktails

Now this interesting. Normally, you just see the Skittles and the Vodka. You never really see it built into an actual drink with other stuff. Here's a few cocktails they made:

Tasting Notes: Flavor-Ice, lightly sweet lime. A bit of Key-Lime Pie.
Cherry/Lime Cocktail: a higher sweet flavor which sorta taste like a pile of skittles in your mouth and is very serviceable to the average "sweet cocktail consumer."

Recipe 1 "Skittle Flip"

Egg White
2 oz. Lime Skittle Vodka (or 1 1/2 if you want less)
1/2 oz. Simple Syrup
Garnish with an Orange Twist

Recipe 2 "Cherry Lime Vodka Skittle Ricky .... Flip" or... "The Awesome Flip."
Egg White
1 oz. Lime Skittle Vodka
1 oz. Cherry Skittle Vodka
1/2 oz. Simple Syrup
Garnish with an Orange Twist

Cool ass way to make egg whites via TipsyBartender

This is actually pretty cool! Egg whites aren't the best thing to eat, but the thing about it is when in alcohol, it kills the bacteria! I like how he picks it up with the plastic bottle and transfers the actual egg yolk elsewhere. Pretty freakin' cool! Enjoy! Later today they actually show a drink they made with the egg whites.

Check out this recipe using egg whites then the one below.

Pimping out your home bar with bar tools and liquors you need

Hey, peeps! This is a great tutorial for those just getting into bartending or those seriously getting into mixology.

Shakers

You definitely need a shaker. One of the most common shakers is the Boston Shaker which is really great for mixing thorough cocktails especially in the case of one that uses Egg Whites.

Jiggers/Shot Glasses/Spouts

You definitely need these handy to help measure how much you give to your patrons or guests. Learning to pour the perfect amount in a drink can make or break a cocktail. In most cases, a typical cocktail or shot is around 1.3 to 1.5 oz worth of liquor. 2.6 to 3.0oz is a double shot worth. Keep that in mind. A Jigger is great for putting your liquor into pour. Shot glasses are great for that, too. But they are mainly used just to take shots. It's best to use a shaker and make sure your liquor is cold or keep your bottle cold in the freezer then pour directly in the shot glass. Spouts, perfect for free pouring and doing different bartending tricks. Whether you come up with a basic long pour or some flairing, it definitely gets your audience going.

Muddler

A muddler is crucial for making different cocktails that require you to use oils, mints, etc for things such as Mojitos, Old Fashioned Cocktails and anything that requires you to mince things up to help create a cocktail.

Wine Tools

In case a friend or somebody wants some wine, you definitely need something to pop the cork. Wine glasses aren't really needed, but they are nice to have on deck.

Blender

This is really good for making your frozen cocktails like a nice Pina Colada or Strawberry Daiquiri. Always great to mix in your ingredients with ice to change not only the density but the flavor.

Juice Extractor/Ice Bucket

Always good to have a Juice Extractor handy when you want fresh juice from fruits instead of the pre-packaged stuff. Definitely makes for a better tasting cocktail with fresh ingredients.
An ice bucket goes without saying, I mean - you definitely need the ice cold and the cocktails cold!

These are some of the main things you need. There are probably some I left out, but with these you should do fine.

I'm going to also post videos on getting the right liquors together to build cocktails for your friends, patrons, etc. Check all that out below! Enjoy!

Colleges: What is the difference between a white college party and black college party?

All right, everyone. I thought I would do something a little bit different. I graduated from school a few years ago, but I still remember a lot of it cuz I would still visit from time to time. Towson was kind of know as the party school, same as University of Maryland. Anyway, there are some significant differences between a White college party and a Black college party. Other ethnic backgrounds may vary depending on the mood or circumstances.

Before I go on, this post is not meant to be racist or prejudice in anyway. This is based on pure observation. And I think it's an interesting topic of discussion. There will also be some funny anecdotes throughout this post. So, let's start with the white party shall we??

What does a white college party consist of?

-Beer, beer, beer
-Kegs, Kegs, Kegs
- Beer Pong
-Cards
-Lots of team shirts, polos and flip flops
-Tables
-Loud Music

To get a picture of what I'm talking about check out this picture:

Typically, these get kind of hectic and they involve large keggers

As you can see, the main premise is alcohol and seeing how far you can take your body with it. LOLOL.

Black people on the other hand, it's a bit of different vibe:

The party is more catered to the ladies and the dancing. It's all about the social interaction between the guy and girl. So instead of a kegger, there is a very strong alcoholic drink called Jungle Juice!

Black party consists of:

Dark Room

Walls

Jungle Juice (usually mixed with Everclear or Bacardi 151 as the base ingredients)

Fine girls dancing

Dancing, Dancing, Dancing

This isn't exactly a "black" party but as you can see everyone is getting lose and there are a lot of people dancing and enjoying the vibe. No beer pong and all that other stuff =P.

Welp, there's a brief analysis of what goes down at your party. make sure you subscribe and yeah...check back for more! Peace!

10 Prohibition-Era Cocktails

You can't get anymore bad ass then Prohibition era based cocktails!!! Here are a few of the sources I used to scrounge these up: Prohibition-Repeal and Ask-Men.

Mary Pickford
Along with her husband, Douglas Fairbanks, the golden-haired Mary Pickford was at the pinnacle of the first generation of movie royalty. This 1920s Cuban concoction does her honor.
Stir well with cracked ice:
1 1/2 oz white rum
1 oz unsweetened pineapple juice
1/2 teaspoon grenadine
Strain into chilled cocktail glass and drop in a maraschino cherry.

Gin and Sin

Recipe
1oz Rehorst Gin
1oz Fresh Squeezed Lemon Juice
1/4oz of Fresh Squeezed Orange Juice
Dash of Grenadine
Ice to top the glass, shake, and double strain the cocktail into a piece of stemware

Bacardi Cocktail
The proximity of Cuba to Florida ensured that the wildly popular Bacardi Cocktail stood a pretty good chance of being made with real Bacardi.
Shake well with cracked ice:
1 1/2 oz light rum
1/2 oz lime or lemon juice
3 dashes grenadine
Strain into chilled cocktail glass

Barbary Coast
Only desperation would cause somebody to mix Scotch and gin, but Prohibition was a desperate time—and, surprisingly, the results aren't half bad.
Shake well with cracked ice:
3/4 oz blended Scotch
3/4 oz gin
3/4 oz crème de cacao
3/4 oz heavy cream
Strain into chilled cocktail glass.

Whiskey Old-Fashioned
The Old-Fashioned was around before Prohibition and it was around after Prohibition, but never was it more needed than during Prohibition—there being no better way invented to improve the taste of indifferent liquor. And if you actually have good liquor...

Muddle 1 sugar cube with a teaspoon of water and 2 dashes of Angostura bitters in the bottom of an Old-Fashioned glass until the sugar dissolves. Add 1 1/2 oz whisk(e)y—in order of Prohibition-era popularity: straight rye (or “rye”), bourbon (or “bourbon”), Canadian or blended Scotch—and stir briefly. Then add 2-3 ice cubes, stir some more, squeeze a large swatch of thin-cut lemon peel over the top and drop it in. This drink is always best if you let it sit for a minute or two before sipping it.

Sidecar
This French creation became the defining cocktail of the era.
Shake well with cracked ice:
1 ¼ oz cognac
½ oz Cointreau
¾ oz fresh-squeezed lemon juice.
Strain into chilled, sugar-rimmed cocktail glass

French 75
Named after an hard-hitting World War I artillery piece, the French 75 is, as far as can be determined, the only cocktail invented in the United States during Prohibition to become a classic.

Shake well with cracked ice:
1 ½ oz London dry gin
½ oz fresh-squeezed lemon juice
¾ oz simple syrup
Strain into highball glass full of cracked ice and top off with chilled champagne.

Bee's Knees
Since the bathtub gin that was being produced at the time tasted like a throat-full of gasoline struck by a bolt of lightning, it was important to mask the flavor with sweetening ingredients like honey and lemon in this classic. The exact origin is hard to pin down, but it's generally accepted as a Prohibition cocktail staple. Most people seem to think it takes its name from a popular saying at the time, in which calling something “the bee’s knees” was high praise.

Ingredients:
1 1/2 oz gin
3/4 oz honey syrup
1 tsp fresh lemon juice

Clover Thyme Club Cocktail

This is a cocktail for the pre-prohibition era.

Recipe
Few clovers of thyme
2 oz of Gin
3/4 oz of Lemon Juice
1/2 oz of Raspberry Syrup
Egg White

The Scofflaw

Recipe
1 oz whisky
1 oz dry vermouth
3/4 oz grenadine (the real pomegranate kind)
Dash of Angostura bitters
