Duplin Scuppernong Wine Review

I recently had this wine during the holidays and I have to say it's not half bad. I wasn't expecting it to be sweet seeing as it's not a moscato or Riesling. However, it was a bit pleasant. Definitely something I could drink from time to time after dinner. And still catch a little vibe.

The wine is based out of North Carolina. I'm more abreast to Californian and Argentine wines but still is not bad at all. The wine is made from muscadine grapes, which stems from the Southeast of the United States (particularly near the Scuppernong River in North Carolina).

The notes you get from the wine include: sweet, subtle, and a bit wild because of how it's grown.

I would have to give this an 8 out of 10. Not too shabby.

Sean Diddy Combs Announces New Ciroc Apple Flavor for 2015

It seems like he's expanding his flavor notes again after last year's Pineapple flavor. This is a perfect late Fall mix. I'm sure this is going to be released either before or after Thanksgiving comes around. I already have an idea of what to mix with this. Maybe an apple sour mix. I'm sure you can mix Ciroc Amaretto with the Ciroc Apple as well. Definitely interested to see how this Green Apple tastes. Smirnoff has a Green Apple flavor but I'm not much akin to Smirnoff. Just not my cup of tea. I can't wait to try this! There will be a review when this comes out.

You Sexy Dog You via Tipsy Bartender

I like the fact they are using a very interesting bourbon called Bird Dog Whiskey, which has a unique blackberry twist in the actual liquor. Never heard of it, but I'm sure you can make some interesting cocktails with it. Here's their recipe:

Middle Layer:
2 oz. (60ml) Bird Dog Blackberry Whiskey
1 oz. (30ml) Triple Sec

Top Layer:
Fill with Raspberry Lemonade

To be absolutely honest, I would've tried adding some Blueberry Lemonade (the Simply Lemonade kind). I might have given it a very unique twang toward the end.

WTF is Tequila? (Tipsy Bartender)

It's very interesting to see this kind of post on Tipsy Bartender, but definitely appreciated. I for one asked this question years back. I always noticed the distinct taste and smell that Tequila has (the mixto and puro agave)and it's always intrigued me. I think the first thing that pondered my mind was why did Tequila usually give me headaches? Of course, I drank Jose Cuervo Especial at the time - if you do your research, it's not 100% Tequila. More than half of it is actually refined sugar put into the product. Hence, you get the bad headaches from drinking it too much. Check an older post from Derrick Schommer of Common Man Cocktails for details on that. Anyway, dope post. Also, check out Common Man cocktails for even more in-depth drink history and origins.

Enhance Your Yard With a Pond or Water Feature

Garden ponds not only make an attractive feature for your back yard but they can also help to support a large variety of plants and wildlife. Before you start out with your pond building project you need to decide upon your objective. Why do you want the pond and what do you want to keep in it?

Do you want to have ornamental fish, do you want to encourage wildlife or do you simply want a water feature which will enhance your home.

Wildlife Ponds – are generally pretty shallow and do not always require a pump and filter system. The water can be purified by the use of well chosen plants although some sort of filter will help to keep the water clear.

Garden Ponds – can be any size or shape you want them to be, depending largely upon the size of your backyard or garden. It will probably need some sort of liner which will allow you to determine the size and shape of your pond to suit your specific needs. This is also the cheapest way of constructing your own pond. Some ponds are pre-formed which is probably the easiest though a more expensive method. They are available in a variety of sizes and shapes so there should be something suitable for your needs.

Pre-formed ponds do need a pump and filter system in order to maintain the quality of the water, and if you want something special like a waterfall feature you will definitely need a pump.

Concrete Ponds – are usually traditional rectangular box shapes and constructed from blocks and bricks which are then sealed using cement and concrete. This type of pond must be sealed with some sort of finishing coat in order to ensure that the surface is fully waterproof. This will also protect the water in the pond from any chemicals which are present in the bricks, cement and / or concrete. It will also help to seal the pond to ensure that the water won’t seep out and escape.

Koi Ponds – these are very specific features for the sole purpose of keeping a collection of beautiful Koi fish. Koi are well known for being messy and do excrete huge amounts of waste products into the pond water so it is essential to have a suitable air pump and filtration system in place. This will help to keep the fish healthy and help to keep the water clear as crystal so that you can see them in all their beauty. If you want a Koi pond it will need to be pretty deep, at least 36 inches of water is required. This helps the water to sustain a comfortable temperature for the fish during the cold months of winter.

There are lots of different plants which can thrive in your back yard pond and each bringing with it a unique purpose. A good selection of pond plants can help to provide food for the fish and wildlife as well as provide a natural filtration system.

At yescomusa.com you will find a large selection of products which can all enhance your garden or yard. They’ve got pumps and filtration systems suitable for pools or for aquariums as well as many other great things. Check out the website at http://yescomusa.com to get some ideas about how they can help you to bring your back yard to life.

Whether you want a pond, an aviary or simply are in need of a new outdoor umbrella sun shade check it out – they’ve got the lot.

Diddy Announces new 7 times Distilled Ciroc Ten Vodka!

This is a definite ultra, ultra premium vodka that's 7 times Distilled. I guess he's going in the realm of a straight sipper with no ice. He's taking note of creating a line that's reserved for the ballers only like Johnnie Walker Blue Label and his recent brand of high-end tequila, DeLeon. I'm already quite a fan of Ciroc but I don't know about dropping two and a half bills. Won't say no if someone offers it, though! The bottle is really sleek and looks like a expensive fragrance. Very smart marketing because you can tell it falls into the whole lifestyle brand. Here's a pic below and a link to Diddy's Instagram announcement!

16 Wine Phrases in Plain English

I saw this article originally on Food and Wine. I thought it was quite hilarious. I'll go into a brief look of the meanings:

"1. “Pop and Pour”

The wine is ready to drink right out of the bottle. No need to decant, it drinks incredibly well the minute you pop the cork.

This bottle is a true “pop and pour,” perfect for a party.

2. “Lay It Down”

No you’re not putting the wine down for a nap, this means it’s a bottle you want to age.

This is a great bottle, but I’d lay it down for a bit because it will definitely get better.

3. “Let It Breathe”

If you let the wine decant, the tannins should soften and it will open up.

We should let the bottle breathe before drinking it.

4. “Blow Off”

Sometimes when you first open a bottle, there can be odd smells of sulfur and other gaseous odors that dissipate once you let the wine sit in the glass for a few minutes. This can also be said when the wine seems to be high in alcohol.

This wine tastes delicious, but I think we need to let it blow off first.

5. “Butter Bomb”

A Chardonnay that is over-oaked.

This Chard is a real butter bomb.

6. “Come Of Age”

Often said in relation to a wine region that was once not in vogue, but is one that all the hipsters are now super into. It’s the spot from which to drink wine. Often said as if the wine from that region wasn’t good until the critics discovered, or rediscovered, it.

The Jura has really come of age.

7. “This Wine Is Hot”

Said when a wine is high in alcohol. It’s hot because you can almost feel the alcohol fumes burning the tips of your nostrils.

Man this California Zin is hot; let’s wait and see if it blows off.

8. “The Wine Is Dead”

When a wine seems to have little flavor, or is full of flavor initially but then that flavor seems to dissipate either while you swallow it or the longer it sits in the glass, it is said to die.

This wine smells amazing, but when I taste it nothing is there; I think it’s dead.

9. “Bottle Shock”

When wine undergoes a long journey, say from Europe to America, or is bottled quickly and then reopened, it can undergo a temporary change that causes it to shut down for a brief period, giving little aroma or flavor. This is called bottle shock.

Bummer, I think this wine is experiencing bottle shock, better wait a few months before opening another bottle.

10. “Entry Level”

A winemaker’s affordable bottle that’s meant to show off their style and approach causing you to get hooked and hopefully move up a tier level.

This is a great entry level bottle; I want to try more from this winery.

11. “Flying Winemaker”

A winemaker that travels around the world making wine in different regions and consulting at different vineyards.

Jean Pierre is a flying winemaker. If he consults, your wine turns to gold.

12. “Horizontal Tasting”

When you taste different bottles of the same variety of wine (e.g., Cabernet) from the same vintage (e.g., 2010) and region (e.g., Bordeaux).

You haven’t truly seen how great the 2005 Bordeaux vintage was until you take part in a horizontal tasting.

13. “Vertical Tasting”

This is similar to the above, but this is a tasting of bottles of the same type of wine that are all made by the same winery (e.g., a specific Cabernet made by the winery) in different years (e.g., 2000, 2001, and 2002 version.

I just came from a vertical tasting of Opus One. It was mind-blowing.

14. “International Variety”

A grape that is grown on every continent where grapes are grown.

Merlot and Cabernet are true international varieties.

15. “Late Harvest”

Grapes that are picked later in the season allowing them to ripen longer. It usually means the wine will be sweeter.

I love late harvest wines; they’re so sweet and delicious.

16. “Cult Wine”

A wine that has a following among enthusiasts that usually drives up the price and makes it hard to buy.

You can’t get this wine unless you wait on a list for years, but this Cult Cab is worth it."

Oatmeal Raisin Iced Cocoa Rum

Okay, here's another cool creation I've done using the Salvadorian cocoa

What I did was take a shot and a half silver rum (Castillo) and I took a few pieces of a big oatmeal raisin cookie. I let it sit in the rum for a couple of hours.

After I let it soak for a while, I muddled it up a bit and the shot and let it simmer. I began making fresh cocoa. I let it cool down for a while then poured it into the glass with ice and stirred it well. I splashed some fresh nutmeg on top and bam!

Recipe
1.5 oz of Infused Oatmeal Raisin Rum
1 cup of freshly made hot chocolate
Splash of Nutmeg

As you can see below, it came out beautifully.

Caliente Salvadorena Tropical Cocktail

This is a special drink that I came up with after a friend of mine decided to make me some Salvadorian hot chocolate. Kudos to u :). As you can see, it starts from freshly handmade cocoa balls (don't bother looking for this in the United States because it comes straight from El Salvador). However, if you got a connect (someone that got the beans), by all means cop it from 'em or let 'em make it for you :).

Anyway, let's go into the drink!

To make the cocoa, follow these instructions and ingredients:

Take a couple of balls of cocoa and put it in the pot. Pour in about 1 1/2 cups or so of water. Add 3 tablespoons of raw sugar.

Put the stove on high and let it melt and simmer for 15 mins.

Continue to stir to help the cocoa fully dissolve.

After that, you can pour some into a mug. Here's the recipe:

4 oz Hot Cocoa

1 oz of rum (I used Haitian Rum -- Barbancourt Rhum)

1/2 oz of 99 Bananas

1/4 oz of Brandy Extract

Cinnamon

Nutmeg

This is by far the perfect winter cocktail! You'll have extra on hand for a couple of friends so you can change the portions as needed. Very nice taste with a lot of richness and dynamics of a strong, fruit flavor (99 bananas) and a darker and stern flavor brought on by the rum. Enjoy!

If you thought this was great, you can check out the Rumchata and Fireball Shot (cinnamon toast crunch shooter) and of course, you can peep how to make your own Rumchata

The Classic Daiquiri (Common Man Cocktails)

This is definitely a solid recipe. Just like a margarita -- less is more. You don't need strawberry and all of these other ingredients to make a good daiquiri. I've never had a daiquiri with salt added to the mix, but I figure it's worth a try. Here's the recipe:

2 oz Light Rum
3/4 oz Simple Syrup
3/4 oz Fresh Lime Juice
Punch of Salt

I like how they go into a brief history of the cocktail. I actually read about the history in a small bartending book a few years. Pretty cool stuff. Enjoy!

UK Rumfest: A Chat with Shervene Shahbazkhani

This is a nice interview with a brand ambassador from Bacardi. I must say some of the flavors of Bacardi lately have been stellar. However, I'm still a fan of their Castillo brand because it takes a bit better for silver and spiced rum and typically half the price.

Malibu Red Sunrise

This was an NYE recipe I came up with right on the fly. I haven't drank Malibu Red in who knows how long so I just decided to create a cocktail right there. Seeing as Malibu Red is coconut rum and tequila infused together, I saw the orange juice and grenadine and said why not?

Recipe

1.5 oz of Malibu Red
Orange Juice
Top with a nice float of Grenadine

Depending on your taste, you can let it naturally sink or just use a spoon and stir. It turned out pretty good.
